What is acupuncture?

I know what you’re thinking, needles…ouch, no thank you. What if I told you that acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of ancient Chinese medicine techniques, would that change your mind? If you’re still unsure, the needles are very thin, just like a cat’s whisker and they don’t hurt. It’s very different from the needles doctors and nurses use to poke you with. Acupuncture is the secret weapon of almost all professional athletes and entire Olympic teams. Not only does acupuncture work for joint pain but it also works to prevent or treat certain health problems. Acupuncture can help ease the harsh symptoms of many medical conditions as well.  People all over the world use acupuncture, of all ages! People say that acupuncture is a magical healing technique because it can help with almost everything under the sun and gets your body back to that normal feeling. Qi (chi) is actually the energy that acupuncture moves around your body which gives you that feeling of relief.

How long has it been around?

Acupuncture has been around for about 2,000 years and is still helping people all over the world today. The needles actually used to be made out of stone, bone and bamboo, but today they are made out of stainless steel. Needles come in packages which are always sterile and they are only as thick as about two human hairs. Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing which will relax your body and can help to promote your body’s self-healing process. The older someone is, the wiser we believe they are, correct? If acupuncture was a person, they would be considered the wisest person you’ve ever known. It’s quite obvious that acupuncture must have amazing benefits because of how long people have been continuing to use it. Throughout the millenniums, our entire way of life has changed, almost everything has changed except for the science behind acupuncture.

Qi and Me?

I know what you’re thinking, what is Qi and what could it possibly have to do with me? Qi (commonly known as chi) which is a term used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that translates to the vital life force. You can think of Qi or Chi as everything that holds the universe together – it’s energy. So what does this have to do with you? Well, in order for you to have and maintain good health- you should have a balance of Qi. If there is an imbalance, deficiency or excess qi in the body, then you will be lacking well being, stress control and social interaction. Have you ever heard of yin and yang? Think of qi as being both yin and yang, it is everything that you know but also all the space that you don’t. Qi is the energy within everything and it’s amazing that we can access qi through acupuncture.

Why does acupuncture work?

All over your body are acupuncture points where qi energy can be accessed and manipulated. There are at least 2,000 acupuncture points in the body and these can be stimulated from needles or from direct pressure called acupressure. Basically, if the qi in your body is congested or imbalanced, your body has a hard time promoting its self-healing process. You may even be able to feel the chi as it starts to flow and move through your body. Your body is magical and can actually repair itself with the help of acupuncture. Some people say that you have to believe in acupuncture for it to work, but that isn’t true. Someone who is completely skeptical and isn’t convinced by this blog that acupuncture could work for them- can be proven wrong. A person can experience the benefits of acupuncture immediately depending on the reasons to why you are seeking help in the first place. Of course, everyone will respond differently to the acupuncture treatment and it may take you more sessions to achieve the results you’re looking for.
